Abstract: |
Archaeological recording was undertaken during the replacement of floor slabs beneath the central tower of a church, and during the removal of a suspended timber floor in the west end of the nave. A layer which probably represented building debris from an extension of the nave in the 19th century was observed. Beneath the tower, extensive disturbance had been caused by brick culverts for heating pipes. Levelling deposits were recorded against the base of the south-west pier, below the make-up layer for the present floor, and it was noted that the base of the south-east pier appeared to have been extensively repaired or strengthened. To the west of the altar platform, it was found that the pulpit base had been built into a shallow pit dug into a layer comparable with that noted beside the north-west pier. [AIP] |
