Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of a single 7m by 5m trench, was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning ermission for the redevelopment of the site. The excavation served only to show the deep level of modern truncation on the site. Although the archaeological background of the area indicated the land had been open land and back gardens in the 17th and 18th centuries, in the 19th century factories and engineering works had been built on the site. Early 20th century brick and concrete foundations for the engineering works had been cut into the natural deposits, effectively truncating everything above. There was also an undated throw hole which may be prehistoric, cut into alluvial clay above the natural gravel. [Au(adp)] |
