Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during structural alterations to the Winchester Arms, which lay within the Scheduled area of Taunton Castle. The excavation of two foundation pads and a foundation trench was monitored. A length of mortared slate wall footing and two other truncated remnants were observed within one of the foundation pads. No dating evidence was obtained for the footing, and observations were too localised to permit any interpretation of its function. The footing appeared to have belonged to a demolished wall from an earlier phase of the present building. It lay on the same alignment, and the same type of footings were seen to underlie one of the existing walls. [Au(adp)] |
