Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken within the walls of an 18th century folly known as Stainsborough Castle. This investigation was conducted to inform speculation that it had been built on the site of an Iron Age hill fort and/or a possible medieval fortification. No archaeological remains or artefacts were discovered within the excavation area. Additional building recording work carried out on the fabric of the folly identified at least two phases of construction, the reuse of the element of an earlier timber framed building and localised survival of decorated plasterwork.
