Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to proposed redevelopment of the site. The archaeological importance of the area was considerable, as reflected in its status as one of the City of Westminster's defined Areas of Special Archaeological Priority. The area had yielded important evidence relating to Middle Saxon London and to the development of the medieval great houses along the Strand. The site lay within the precinct of Savoy Palace, first attested in the 13th century, later converted into the Hospital of St John the Baptist. However, construction of the present buildings on the site had had a severe impact upon the potential survival of archaeological deposits. Over the majority of the site the existing double-depth basements would have removed virtually all remains. The report recommended that the estimated archaeological survival be cross-checked by obtaining data from the site itself, via on site observations including, if warrented, selective archaeological field evaluation.
