Abstract: |
Additional archaeological work comprising earthwork, topographic and geophysical surveys were carried out in the southern part of Smithy Wood and in fields to the east of the wood at the proposed site of a motorway serve area. The earthwork/topographic surveys identified a possible bell pit in the southern part of Smithy Wood and detailed mapping was completed on previously identified earthworks. The geophysical survey identified discrete anomalies that could have been caused by industrial activity although geological variations or more recent anthopogenic activity could have also accounted for the observed responses.
