Abstract: |
The size of the geotechnical pits was limited by the fact that the car park was still in use. This has meant that it has not been possible during this phase of the works to determine whether Plymouth (Drake's) Leat survives within the site. The eastern channel that crosses the site, as shown on the Tithe Map and the early OS map, probably lies just outside the area occupied by the car park and within the area landscaped for the construction of Drake's Circus. As such, this stretch of leat will probably have been destroyed by post-war landscaping. However, the leat may survive in the vicinity of the mill buildings on the southern edge of the site. The position of the western stretch of leat within the site was unknown and was not shown on any cartographic representations of the site. Additional archaeological excavations or observation of the groundworks for the construction of foundation would be required to resolve the question of whether the leat survives within the site.
