Abstract:
Archaeological excavations were carried out at the proposed site of a residential development, where an earlier evaluation had revealed medieval ditches, gullies and pits. It had previously been suggested that the southern part of the site may have lain within the area of a medieval moat. The footprints of the proposed house-plots and garages and the access roads were excavated, and three phases of activity were identified. The earliest dated from the Saxo-Norman period, when pits, ditches and a gully had been dug. Phase 2 was dated to the 12th-14th centuries, when further pit-cutting had occurred and the division of land had become more extensive and formalised. Poorly-defined structural remains may have been associated with this phase. The post-medieval period had seen the establishment of the present-day land divisions, and use of the site as an orchard. Two foundation trenches in the southern part of the site corresponded to structures mapped by the Ordnance Survey in 1886. No evidence of a medieval moat was found, and a re-examination of the available documentary, cartographic and aerial photographic evidence suggested the correct site of this feature elsewhere within Bassingbourn.
