Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during construction work for a new hotel. Pottery in the cultivation soil did indicate medieval activity in the vicinity and in addition a number of late medieval and early post-medieval tile fragments (roof and oven) were found. Eleven moulded Ham stone blocks comprising tracery from later medieval ecclesiastical context were consistent with the 'Decorated style of the 14th century; recorded by Pulman as representing the earliest architectural characteristics of the nearby medieval church of St Thomas. The well-preserved remains of the below ground structure of a 19th century icehouse were identified and recorded. [Au(adp)] |
