Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed construction of employment units, an access road and car parking facilities. The Basingstoke canal and the southern edge of Horsell Common were located approximately 70m to the north of the site. The site was characterised by industrial hard surfacing (concrete) and small buildings, which would have once been associated with the gasholder station. The gasholders themselves, prior to their recent removal, stood at the west of the site, occupying approximately 30% of the total area. The site had remained undeveloped until the late 19th century when the gas works were constructed. The gasholders and various other buildings and features would have had some impact upon on any existing archaeological remains. However there were still areas which had not been touched by development leaving islands of potentially undisturbed ground. Geotechnical work suggested that there was the survival of earlier buildings beneath the present concrete surface, these probably related to the earlier phases of the gas works. [Au(abr)] |
