Abstract: |
A desk-study was carried out following proposals for a new development. The archaeological potential for prehistoric artefacts and features was low, but was moderate to high for Roman deposits, with two roads recorded to the south and north of the proposed development. No evidence of occupation during the Saxon period is present, but by medieval times the bridge over the Channelsea had diverted the main road from London to along what was now Stratford High Street. The likelihood of the medieval village extending as far to the east as the development site was considered to be low to moderate, although the modern street pattern preserved earlier routes and roadways. The Stratford area saw large expansion during the post-medieval period, and the potential of the site to retain archaeological deposits from this period was considered to be high. The northern area of the site remained largely open ground until the late 19th century, when it developed due, in part, to the introduction of the railways. The eastern and southern boundaries of the site retained a greater likelihood for stratified archaeology, The Grove and Broadway followed medieval roads, and St John's Church was located in an area which had been used as a post-medieval cemetery. The area on the northern side of St John's Church was the area of highest potential, but groundworks might have disturbed archaeological deposits of the post-medieval, medieval and Roman periods.
