Abstract: |
Following proposals for the renovation of Normanby Manor House, a scheme of archaeological recording and monitoring was carried out. The core of the 18th century building was examined after the stripping of recent finishes and excavation in the grounds was the subject of a watching brief. A number of minor alterations to the internal arrangements of the house were noted. Particular attention was paid to the decoration of the principal ground-floor room, which had a cornice and panelling. Much of this proved, on close examination, to be made of modern plywood, and the whole room had been decorated with a recent wood-grain finish. Excavation of the foundations of a new wing to be attached to the north-west corner of the house revealed a single lightly-built brick wall. This was part of the former stable building that could be seen in the early OS maps of the area. No evidence of medieval occupation or use of the site was revealed in the course of the work. The 18th century structure of the house was not significantly affected by the conversion of the building. [Au(abr)] |
