Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site which lay on the marshland to the west of Thorney Island, the site of the principal Abbey and Palace in England during the medieval period and of Parliament since its inception in the 13th century. Thorney Island was also settled during the prehistoric and Roman periods although the importance and scope of these earlier settlements was uncertain. Boreholes and test pits suggested that the southern side of the site may have been dry land until the late Saxon or medieval periods and that, to the north, it may have contained alluvial deposits from the marshes bordering one of the braiding channels of the Tyburn. Reclamation works may have made this land inhabitable during later periods and evidence of this, such as infilling and revetments to the channel edge, could have been present. Work elsewhere had also shown that the marshy margins of the eyots were a favoured location for prehistoric activity. Localised survival of archaeological deposits should have been expected although basements from the former 19th century brewery could be present. The greater majority of the current site also had basements, although the northern and the southern courtyards appeared largely unbasemented. Much of the site therefore may have been heavily truncated, considerably reducing archaeological survival, although some deposits may have been present beneath the basemented area and in the locally unbasemented areas. The report recommended further archaeological evaluation. [Au(adp)]
