Abstract: |
Proposed sand and gravel extraction led to a desk-based assessment of the offshore area. Three temporal areas were identified-Lower, Middle and Early Upper Palaeolithic remains, in situ Early Upper Palaeolithic and Early-Middle Mesolothic artefacts in the upper levels of the gravel, and wrecks and related material from prehistoric to modern times. There was potential for impact on the archaeological remains, however this was difficult to quantify due to the the absence of hard evidence. Mitigation for the early prehistoric archaeology was noted as hard to enforce, as the nature of the record prohibited a clear strategy. Dredging exlusion zones were suggested for the later remains.
