Abstract: |
The excavation of Shepard's Wharf enabled a more detailed study of the construction and subsequent modification of Rattenbury's Great House in the context of the parallel development of the Chinahouse and other adjacent properties. In addition to providing a greater understanding of the development of the site itself, the project significantly added to information about the sequence of deposits in an area where foreshore reclamation took place. The excavation also yielded a large volume of artefacual evidence, local and imported pottery of the 17th and 18th centuries. The discovery of a clay tobacco pipe kiln, the only 17th-century kiln of this date to be excavated in Devon was also recorded during the course of this investigation.[Au(abr)] |
