Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the submission of a planning application for the refurbishment and development. Amersham was first recorded in 1066 as Agmodesham. A royal grant of a market and fair was given in 1200. The SMR revealed 23 entries within a 500m radius of the site. The earliest entry related to Middle Bronze Age, Roman, medieval and Saxon finds. A number of entries related to buildings, ranging from the 13th to 17th century. Finally, the last two centuries in the SMR were for a stake, used for the purpose of religious persecution, and the site of a burial at Turpins Row, where the skull and some bones were found in association with 15th-16th century pottery. The archaeological importance of the site was primarily due to its position within the historic core of Amersham Old Town, an area containing a number of Listed Buildings including the Kings Arms itself and the Market Hall, which lay close by. It was possible that the development area may have contained the remains of contemporary or earlier medieval buildings related to the Kings Arms. [Au(adp)]
