Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment for five sites located within the precincts of Bristol Royal Infirmary was undertaken. The earliest known occupation in the area was during the Romano-British period on the opposite side of Maudlin Street, and similar activity may have taken place on any of the sites under study. Two religious houses were established during the 12th century on this part of the slopes of Kingsdown. Following the Dissolution, housing development began to creep up the slopes and by the early 18th century virtually the whole of Upper Maudlin Street was under development. Substantial redevelopment occured during the present century. [Auth abridged] |
