Abstract: |
A watching brief maintained during the excavation of a pipe trench for a replacement water main in the village of Askham encountered features, including one wall foundation, close to the property boundary east of the Parish Rooms, which probably represented a precursor to the present property boundary, but had extended further to the south of the modern fence line until the road had been realigned and widened; a depression opposite Priory Cottage, backfilled probably after the 17th century with brick, gravel, clay and silt; post-medieval domestic refuse pits in Church Lane; and a deposit of material at least partly derived from a brickyard/kiln deliberately tipped in a hollow section of metalled road in front of the eastern range of buildings of Brickyard Farm.
