Abstract: |
The first evidence for occupation within the study area was from the early Roman period. The site was centrally positioned in Londinium and was to the east-south-east of the forum and basilica complex. Observations made during the cutting of sewer trenches in the mid-19th century recorded Roman structural features. Some portions of Plantation House had been archaeologically investigated during the 1930's when mainly Roman remains were revealed. The site appeared to have been in an area typically occupied by substantial domestic houses to either side of an east-west street throughout most of the Roman period. The area appeared to have been wealthy and artefactual finds to date did not indicate intensive commercial activity. Victorian and recent basements were likely to have removed much of the archaeological resource above the early Roman levels, however deep features such as wells, cess pits and occasional deep foundations from later periods may have survived.
