Abstract: |
Four trial trenches (6.5m by 7.5m, 3.8m by 2m, 19.5 by 5.5 and 3m by 3m) were excavated as an archaeological evaluation of the site prior to its proposed comercial redevelopment. The only archaeological presence on the site comprised material found within the former garden soils in trench 1. This material comprised broken domestic refuse that had clearly been dumped in the gardens and mostly dated from the late 19th century. The report concluded that there were no archaeological deposits present on the site before the modern period. However, a study of the geological drift deposits had shown that there was some diversity within the former passage of the Ravensbourne within this broad area of the river valley. Such diversity might have explained the paucity of evidence for ancient settlement in this marginal area. [Au(adp)] |
