Abstract:		 An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in relation to proposed development of a four-storey block with basement car parking. The site lay partially within an Archaeological Priority Zone but did not contain any SAMs or listed buildings and was not within a Conservation Area. There were numerous entries in the GLSMR within a 500m radius of the site. The Roman road called Stane Street was thought to have run along the line of Clapham Road and documentary evidence suggested activity occurred within the vicinity of the site over a long period of time. It was clear from historical maps that the site was partially developed by the mid-19th century, and gradually became increasingly utilised. By 1952, the laundry had been constructed and the site had remained the same up until the present date. Previous archaeological works were known to have occurred within the site boundary. A watching brief was conducted in 1984 at 372-376 Clapham Road, but no archaeological evidence was found. In light of this it was recommended that no further works be carried out upon the site, subject to the opinion of the Archaeological Advisor for the London Borough of Lambeth. [Au(adp)]
