Abstract:
The investigation comprised archaeological fieldwalking, field reconnaissance and geophysical surveys of the proposed 8km long natural gas pipeline. Of the forty-nine plots within the fieldwalking area, none were suitable for systematic artefact retrieval. Only four fields produced finds. The 24 artefacts recovered included pottery, clay tobacco pipe, ceramic building material, and burnt flint. The distribution of artefacts did not reveal any areas of archaeological importance. The field reconnaissance survey identified four plots which contained previously unknown earthworks, which in one plot, were thought to be ridge and furrow remains. The geophysical survey was undertaken on approximately 6km. About half of the fields surveyed produced magnetic anomalies. Most of these were weak, isolated and/or incoherent and not necessarily archaeologically significant. However, a moderate to high degree of confidence was given to the archaeological significance of four anomaly clusters, and a low to moderate confidence was given to a further ten. Some of the potential 'sites' corresponded with localised magentic susceptibility values. [Au(adp)]
