Abstract:
A series of four hand-excavated 1m test pits, a site survey and a grave monument survey were carried out ahead of a planning application by St. Swithun's Church to build an extended vestry and church hall on the north side of St. Swithun's. The site survey revealed no features within the building footprint that may have related to the earlier history of St. Swithun's Church. Grave-cuts were identified in all four test pits, largely cut into disturbed ground, indicating 19th-20th century burials below a depth of 1.2m. Although no human remains were found in the course of the excavation, a coffin was identified in test pit 02. The grave monument survey noted 26 headstones within and a further 9 close to, the footprint of the proposed building, dating from 1810 to 1921 (with a later interment dating to 1941). At least two of these (1 & 7) may have had associated substantial brick burial shafts below ground that would have impacted upon the development. These remains could have provided a significant funerary evidence including monument construction and coffin furniture. [Au(adp)]
