Abstract: |
Archaeological work (watching brief, salvage excavation, excavation) undertaken during two phases of extension to the Sewage Treatment Works revealed a hearth area, briquetage, pottery, charcoal and animal bone from a previously unknown Late Iron Age salt-processing site. Radiocarbon dates were obtained from a thin underlying peat layer, dated to Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age, and from a wooden stake fragment within the briquetage deposit; the date for the briquetage deposit conflicted with the later date obtained from the typological parallels for the pottery.
