Abstract: |
The site lay in Insulae 23 and 24 of the Roman town. Its north-western half coincided with the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Colchester Castle and Upper Castle Park. The gravel street that separated the Insulae was well preserved in the north but heavily truncated in the south. Roman structures, presumably town-houses, were present either site of this street. Wall lines, tessellated and mortar floors and areas of gravelling [yards or paths] were also present, under a demolition layer. The site had generally been heavily truncated by post-medieval and modern pits and service trenches. [Au(adp)] |
