Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed development of a new theatre and offices. The potential archaeological remains that would have survived on the site prior to the 19th century included waterfront structures dating from the 13th to 18th centuries and Roman to post-medieval foreshores. The construction of the present buildings and 19th century warehouses would have had an impact on these archaeological deposits. However, excavations undertaken on the northern end of the site in the 1970s and a comparison of the depths of existing basements and potential deposits indicated that survival of archaeological remains was likely. The report concluded that the proposed works would potentially involve the removal of archaeological remains of 13th to 18th century date, which survive beneath the modern basement slab in the area of the proposed basement.
