Abstract: |
The assessment and walkover survey was undertaken on an area of reclaimed land, and associated sea defences, on the western shore of the Severn estuary. Most of the study area was likely to have been subject to early reclamation. Further, more recent, natural and human activity, however, had resulted in these earlier defence schemes lying some distance inland from the current defences, and the line of the proposed new works. Only at the western end of the currently proposed scheme, where the route of the new defences turned inland towards Alvington Court Farm were the new works coincident with historic features. The possibility existed along this western zone of disturbance of surviving early sea defences, and other archaeological deposits, dating from both the medieval and Roman periods. [Au] |
