Abstract: |
The report offered an appraisal of the archaeological implications of the redevelopment of the site. The Alpha site was not situated in an area of archaeological potential and did not have any references from the SMR within its boundary. The site did not contain any Listed Buildings or SAMs. Poyle and the surrounding areas were well known for archaeological remains relating to prehistoric activity and the SMR showed a number of features, which potentially dated from the prehistoric period. A deep water main (aqueduct) ran underneath the western half of the site at 25m below ground level. Constructed after 1983, it would have been tunnelled and therefore would have affected no archaeological deposits lying over 20m above. However, due to the latter, shallow foundations were considered appropriate for the proposed development, and spread foundations were recommended. If these foundations were used then they may not effect the prehistoric layers (depending upon the depth of the foundations in relation to the depth of the significant archaeological layers).
