Abstract: |
Archaeological recording was undertaken within a Grade I Listed Elizabethan house after the minor collapse of part of its ground floor. The collapse was enlarged, in order to insert two Rigid Steel Joists; during this work, it became apparent that the collapse was due to the subsidence of backfill material. Archaeological examination and recording confirmed that a sub-basement room had been discovered. This had probably been backfilled during the second half of the 18th century, and may have been one of a series of similar rooms. A blocked-in stone mullion window and a brick partition wall were recorded, and post-medieval artefacts, including pottery, glass, clay pipe, a horseshoe, a spoon bowl and pieces of animal bone were recovered.
