Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the groundworks for a new sewage treatment works adjacent to the pulic entrance to the site. Alluvial layers were sealed by a 2 metre thick deposit of peat. This was subjected to two C14 dates which suggested it was formed in the Early Bronze Age. Above this were two water-laid deposits which may have represented the silting of the upper (western) end of the mill pond which may have truncated the earlier deposits when it was dug in the late 14th century. The finds from these layers suggested silting during the medieval to early post-medieval period. This would conform with the historical sources which suggested the pond was infilled by the later 16th century. [Au] |
