Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during enveloping works at the Mills and Bakery Building in Plymouth. Construction of the building commenced in c.1830. The building was designed to incorporate a bakery, with adjacent wings (lofts), and mills to the north flanking central engine houses and a boiler room. The mills and the bakery were connected by a central span block, the design of which was amended during its construction. This created two small courtyards. Baking appears to have started in the mid 1840s and continued through until 1925, although by that date at least part of the mills had been converted into stores. [Au(adp)] |
