Abstract: |
Two trenches excavated within the grounds of Holwood House, located the real position of the southern edge of the Iron Age hillfort. The outer rampart, outer ditch and counterscarp bank were revealed and as expected, found to be situated outside of the current Scheduled Ancient Monument perimeter. Adding to earlier evaluation work, the true line of the southern defences were also found to coincide with existing earthworks which had previously been presumed to be related to garden landscaping and recent industrial development. The excavated ditch and bank segments and re-discovered earthworks represented a substantial reconstruction of the southern defences that complimented Milne's 1790 survey. [Au] |
