Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during topsoil and subsoil stripping for a ground floor extension to the rear of "The Old Forge Craft Shop". The Old Forge (HWCM 12519) is one of a group of four Grade II listed buildings along Mill Bank dating from the 15th-17th centuries, and lies to the south west of the historic core of Weobley. To the east are the medieval motte and bailey earthworks of Weobley Castle and less than 100m to the north is the site of a medieval pottery kiln, both of which are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. The site is within the planned medieval town of Weobley and lies to the rear of the frontages along Mill Bank. A limited range of post-medieval deposits were observed and recorded, comprising a subsoil, a topsoil and the remains of a stone foundation. A small assemblage of residual pottery was also recovered; this comprised mostly 18th to 20th century pottery, although a single fragment of medieval jug was found.[AIP]
