Abstract: |
Four evaluation trenches were opened which revealed a number of 20th century service trenches cut into natural chalk, as well as solution hollows filled with clay. A step cut edge was encountered in the lower, north-eastern end of the site, which was interpreted as evidence for either quarrying or terracing into the slope. Layers of redeposited chalk and soil had been deposited against the cut edge to a depth of 2 metres but contained no dating evidence. Despite the fact that the site lay close to an Area of Archaeological Significance and adjacent to the historic core of Berkhamsted, no evidence for medieval activity was recovered from the site.
