Abstract: |
An open area excavation identified the remains of a medieval building on the street frontage. It was likely that this was composed of two smaller dwellings as part of a terraced longhouse form. The evidence suggested that the dwellings possibly had a byre at the western end and living quarters at the eastern end. It was probable that the building continued into the field to the east. Confirmation of this would establish if the excavated remains were definitely the western end of part of a terraced longhouse formation. The pottery assemblage was of regional significance because of its largely early post-Conquest date. The date range of 11th to 13th century covered a relatively short period of about 200 years, or up to eight generations. Significant assemblages of animal bone, metalwork and other finds were recovered. Architectural fragments indicate that an early high status building stood in the near vicinity of the site.
