Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken as part of County Council plans to build new structures within the existing school. The fact that the site contained a known Roman site and the surrounding landscape contained a number of other sites immediately highlighted the area as having significant archaeological interest. The Barton area to the north-west of the study area contained known Roman settlement. The precise nature and extent of this settlement was not known but several investigations, including detailed excavation resulting from development work, had provided an insight into this Roman activity. The cluster of Roman findspots just to the north of the site spread over several hectares close to the line of the Roman road and suggested the presence of a large roadside settlement. The spread of Roman finds in this area suggested a spread of occupation around 300m along the road and up to 150m either side of it potentially to be expected. Cartographic and documentary evidence supported this potential, given that the site had had little previous disturbance, with use up until the early 20th century as farmland. The construction of the Isolation Hospital in 1906 was confined to the western portion of the area. As such, disturbance to archaeologically relevant layers would be restricted to the footprints of the former hospital buildings and the current school buildings, the majority of which would be unaffected by the proposed redevelopment. The construction of new buildings in the north-western portion of the site would involve the possible truncation and/or severe disturbance of archaeologically relevant layers. Therefore, a field evaluation was recommended for this area. The proposed redevelopment included the demolition of an existing building and its replacement by a hard play area. This activity might encounter some archaeology, particularly as it lay very close to the projected line of the Roman road, which passed between two the redevelopment areas. It was recommended that this area be subject to a watching brief. The proposed resurfacing of existing hard play areas to form the car part was an activity most unlikely to affect archaeologically relevant layers, unless this too were to involve truncation, or to be accompanied by service trench digging. As such this area may not require any further archaeological consideration. Finally, there was a possibility of future proposals for a swimming pool in the north-east corner of the site. If this development proposals did taken place, creation of the pool would certainly lead to the truncation of the archaeologically relevant levels, and it was recommended that this area be subject to an archaeological evaluation.
