Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken as part of a mitigation strategy aimed at preserving in situ the majority of underlying deposits within an 'archaeologically-sensitive zone', defined as a 35m wide strip along the Main Street frontage. Relatively little of archaeological significance was revealed. However, a possible hearth and related structure were identified on the eastern edge of the sensitive zone. The presumed hearth was positioned on the edge of an earthwork platform. Adjacent to the hearth was a small sub-circular area of cobbles and brick, partly surrounded by a sub-rectangular gully. No dating evidence was recovered from any of these features, although the results from the previous excavations might suggest a late medieval or post-medieval date. [Au(abr)]
