Abstract: |
Two trial trenches were excavated on the site of a proposed extension. The earliest features were deposits dumped on the foreshore in the late 15th or early 16th century in front of an earlier timber revetment. This was superseded by a later revetment (Waterfront 1), largely constructed of reused ship timbers, which formed part of the west bank of the River Hull in the later 15th to early 16th centuries. The chalk wharf surface was record, but no contemporary buildings. The ship timbers themselves came from a seagoing cog, probably constructed c. 1400, and quite possibly obtained from a Hanseatic Lague trading vessel. Waterfront 1 was subsequently replaced in the 17th century by a possible openwork jetty (Waterfront 2), although no associated revetment or river wall was observed. This structure collapsed, and overlying dumps revealed that it was replaced, possibly by a structure on, or close to the present river wall. During the subsequent watching brief, a number of further timbers were found, including several from a ship. The remains of several phases of an associated brick warehouse showed that the new wharf was occupied until the warehouse collapsed in 1861. Extensive foundations of the later 19th century building which replaced it were present, and had severely truncated the surviving remains. [Au(abr)] |
