Abstract: |
Archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to proposed development. Brock Hall and associated grounds were considered of national importance and the remains of the deserted medieval settlement potentially lay within the environs. The trenches revealed evidence of activity probably predating the hall, possibly related to some form of quarrying occurring during the medieval period that had subsequently been backfilled. Any remaining hollows or undulations seemed to have been backfilled during works on the Hall in the 17th and later centuries. The series of post holes, pits and possible beam slot were undateable. They may have predated the Hall and related either to the quarry activity or possible earlier occupation, but this could not be stated with any certainty. All other activity within this part of the development was contemporary with the construction of the swimming pool and associated gardens. The trenches adjacent to the coach house revealed no pre-19th century activity. [Au(adp)] |
