Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken within the standing remains of an old blacksmiths workshop. There were proposals to develop the site for residential accommodation. A photographic record was made of internal architectural features of the standing building and one trench was opened. A 19th-century sewer pipe was found to have been lain through the site on a north east to south west alignment. The cut for this pipe revealed, in section, stratified deposits dating back to the mid 16th century and the remains of an unidentified structure of the early 17th century. Due to health and safety restrictions it was not possible to expose any earlier material that may have survived at a greater depth. The construction date of the standing building was confirmed as early 19th century with the Redcross Lane frontage built directly on top of an 18th century wall. [Au(abr)]
