Abstract: |
The proposed development site lay over several areas of archaeological interest. At the northern end of the site, the footprint of the development lay directly over the site of the former Bonhay/Powhay Mill. There had been mills in that position since the medieval period, and it was likely that remains of them survived. The entire length of the western half of the footprint lay over the line of the Lower Leat. The leat was a substantial structure and, although backfilled, was likely to remain in a good state of preservation. The southern end of the development, fronting onto Tudor Street, lay over the site of several phases of ancillary buildings associated with the mills which would also have fronted onto the leat.
