Abstract: |
Archaeological observation of groundworks was carried out within the medieval town. A series of make-up layers (one containing 13th/14th-century pottery) were cut by a circular feature which appeared to have been the remains of the base of an early post-medieval oven. Other spreads of limestone and clay nearby may have represented the remains of further ovens. On the western half of the site were stone wall foundations, superseded by brick ones, while a series of post-medieval yard surfaces were recorded on the east side of the site. To the south two rectangular tanks were probably cess-pools for a toilet shown on the 1851 Board of Health Plan, while to the north-west another cistern may have been associated with soap-making or brewing, both of which were carried out on the premises in the 18th and 19th centuries.
