Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken as a result of a planning application to erect agricultural buildings, with improved highway access to the west of Crockerhill. Five trenches were excavated with little archaeology being found. Small quantities of brick rubble were thought to come from a WWII prisoner-of-war camp sited there in the 1940s, and residual flints and a sherd of pottery were also recovered. Evidence for the Aldingbourne Raised Beach was sought in other trenches, but it was concluded that the beach line lay beyond the boundary of the site. A suspected waste flake of Palaeolithic date was found. [Au(abr)] |
