Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was requested by the local planning authority in advance of the proposed restoration of the water gardens. The site contained the remains of an important formal water garden laid out by Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax, from around 1710. The work was the third phase of an ongoing project. Despite heavy disturbance around the Upper and Lower Pools, sufficient information was recovered to give an approximate picture of their original layout. [Au(abr)] |
