Abstract:
Air photograph plotting and analysis was undertaken as the first stage of an archaeological evaluation of c.26ha of land. The study was occasioned by a proposed planning application to Bedfordshire County Council for the construction of a new brickworks and would be used in the preparation of an Environmental Statement for the proposed development. The study area lay in a low-lying clay vale (Marston Vale), and was situated between known areas of settlement in the Iron Age, Roman and medieval periods. A desktop study carried out in 1999 identified a number of cropmark features in the vicinity of the proposed development and recommended that further work be undertaken to define the exact nature of these features. The study identified and plotted a number of cropmark features. These were classified according to the following categories: cropmarks of geological origin; cropmarks of archaeological origin; cropmarks of possible archaeological origin; furrows of ridge-and-furrow cultivation; cropmarks of modern origin. Cropmarks of archaeological origin included a series of enclosures which possibly dated from the Late Iron Age or early Romano-British periods. [Au(abr)]
