Abstract: |
An assessment was undertaken to identify the likely impact of the proposed A69 improvements between Scarrow Hill and Cleugh Head. The assessment was undertaken with three principal objectives. Firstly, to identify and locate known sites of historic interest lying within, or immediately adjacent to, the route corridor. Secondly, to make an assessment of the effects of the proposed development and ancillary works on these sites and their setting. Thirdly, to propose appropriate mitigation measures which could be taken to avoid, reduce or remedy any adverse effects on the cultural heritage. The assessment identified a number of archaeological sites and historic buildings within the study area. Some of these sites being either Scheduled Ancient Monuments, Listed Buildings or sites that fell within the boundary of the UNESCO Hadrian's Wall Military Zone World Heritage Site. It was noted as being unlikely given the location of the affected sites within the corridor that the impact of the road on the remains could either be avoided or reduced except by substantial alteration to the route alignment. The adverse impact of the road development would best be remedied through a programme of further evaluation, survey and investigation. [Au(adp)] |
