Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken of two sites close to the centre of Bristol. Until 1940 these areas had formed part of the central commercial district of the city. Archaeological recording and excavation had shown that many structures of medieval and later date had survived to ground level. These included the synagogue (first mentioned in 1294-6, and demolished in the 1770s), the inner town wall, and the possible north to south town wall, the barbican gate of the castle (medieval) and a number of cellars. Medieval and post-medieval cellars were known to have been present and were in some instances certainly extant. Over parts of the site archaeological deposits of the medieval period or earlier did not exist at ground level except over the roofs of vaults. [Au(adp)] |
