Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was identified that there was a history of coal mining in the area immediately north of the site, but no firm evidence for extraction could be found in the study area, although a few features in the north-western part of the site had yet to be investigated. Across most of the site the sole evidence was for pure agricultural use, possibly originating as strips within a large medieval field operated under the open-field system. A bank and a ditch, found in different parts of the site, were of interest, but lay largely beyond the site boundary and were unlikely to have been seriously affected by the proposed development. On the northern edge of the site was a spring that now emptied into a trough-shaped cistern. A drain ran east to west through the middle of the study area, and this was culverted in places.
