Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a proposed clay extraction and landfill site identified that the area had formed part of an extensive arable field during the medieval and post-medieval periods, and that ridge and furrow earthworks were preserved within the site. Areas of archaeological interest recorded in the surrounding area included linear cropmarks which may have represented early settlement, an Anglo-Saxon cemetery, the site of a moated settlement, medieval settlements and a Second World War airfield. It was concluded that any archaeological deposits at the site itself would have been severely eroded by ploughing, and were most likely to have been preserved within discrete features cut into the subsoil. Evaluation using techniques such as geophysical survey and trial trenching was recommended. [AIP] |
