Abstract: |
A 15m trial trench was excavated. The earliest deposit identified was natural London Clay, which was overlain by an organic silt/clay, probably produced by water ponding at the bottom of the hill. The organic silt/clay produced post-medieval ceramic building material, this was overlain by 19th century dumped clay containing brick fragments, used to raise the land level for the railway sidings and overlain by a layer of brick and concrete rubble. The trial borehole indicated the presence of a thick band of dumped layers containing chalk and brick rubble, stone and gravel. The report concluded that there was no evidence for settlement or human activity on the site before the late post-medieval period. [Au(abr)] |
